Ukraine Urges Greater Global Action Against Russia

(MENAFN) In a discussion with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Tuesday, Ukraine’s Prime Minister conveyed appreciation for the United Nations' role in humanitarian efforts and its involvement in the Black Sea Grain Initiative.

He simultaneously urged the global community to heighten its pressure on Russia.

During the conversation, Denys Shmyhal asserted that Russia persists in targeting non-combatants and demonstrates no inclination to participate in diplomatic negotiations.

“Russia is not willing to negotiate, so we must force it to peace through systematic international pressure, toughening sanctions and providing Ukraine with the necessary weapons to defend itself,” he stated on X.

He also highlighted the critical demand for enhanced international cooperation in landmine clearance operations.

“Special emphasis was placed on demining. We need additional assistance from our partners,” he emphasized.

Shmyhal expressed his appreciation to Guterres for his direct involvement in the now-halted grain initiative and acknowledged his awareness of Ukraine’s pressing requirements amid the ongoing conflict.

The Black Sea Grain Initiative, established through mediation by Türkiye and the United Nations in 2022, sought to mitigate the worldwide food crisis by ensuring the safe export of Ukrainian grain via its ports.

However, Russia exited the agreement in 2023, prompting persistent appeals from Kyiv and international entities to establish alternative arrangements and reinstate a similar pact.
