Russian Forces Uncover Ukrainian Chemical Weapons Cache

(MENAFN) Russian military units have uncovered an improvised chemical laboratory and several vials filled with prohibited toxins at what was once a Ukrainian base in the Donetsk People’s Republic, according to an announcement made on Tuesday by the Federal Security Service (FSB).

The stash was located near the village of Ilyinka during a Russian troop advance and marks the second such find in 2025, the agency noted.

In video footage issued by the FSB, operatives wearing chemical-resistant suits are shown handling the hazardous materials, which are said to include chloropicrin – a noxious substance banned under the Chemical Weapons Convention.

As stated by the security service, the chemicals had been coupled with plastic explosives and turned into makeshift weapons intended to be deployed from drones.

“This year we have discovered two caches with munitions intended for drone strikes on Russian positions. These munitions were a mix of chloropicrin and plastic explosives, to maximize the area of effect,” said one FSB representative.

The spokesperson also asserted that Ukraine's use of outlawed combat tactics has become “commonplace,” highlighting past incidents such as the unearthing of a hydrogen cyanide-producing lab in May 2024 and another stockpile of chloropicrin found in October of the previous year.

“Each case of preparation and use of chemical weapons by Ukraine is documented by the relevant authorities to ensure that none of the perpetrators escape responsibility,” the FSB officer added.

In response, a formal criminal case has been launched concerning the manufacture and distribution of weapons of mass destruction.

In a separate statement, Moscow’s deputy industry and trade minister, Kirill Lysogorsky, strongly criticized the revelations, accusing the Ukrainian government of intentionally targeting both armed personnel and unarmed civilians in breach of global conventions.

“The Ukrainian regime systematically prepares and deploys chemical agents – not only against Russian forces and officials but also against peaceful residents in affected territories,” Lysogorsky declared, condemning what he described as “terrorism disguised as warfare.”
