Trump Weighs NATO Withdrawal Amid Lack of Support for Iran Conflict
During a recent interview, Trump sharply criticized the military alliance, describing it as a “paper tiger,” and suggested that leaving the long-standing defense pact is now firmly on the table. When pressed on whether he might revisit the issue of US membership after the conflict, he made it clear the matter is “beyond reconsideration.”
“I was never swayed by NATO. I always knew they were a paper tiger, and Putin knows that too, by the way,” he said.
Allied nations have reportedly been hesitant to assist in reopening the Strait of Hormuz, a vital shipping corridor responsible for roughly one-fifth of global oil transport. Iran has managed to keep the passage effectively shut for several weeks, severely disrupting energy supplies, pushing oil and gas prices higher, and fueling fears of a worldwide economic downturn.
Trump also expressed confusion over the lack of allied backing. “Beyond not being there, it was actually hard to believe. And I didn’t do a big sale. I just said, ‘Hey’, you know, I didn’t insist too much. I just think it should be automatic.”
He contrasted the current situation with past US actions, pointing to prior support for other nations. “We’ve been there automatically, including Ukraine. Ukraine wasn’t our problem. It was a test, and we were there for them, and we would always have been there for them. They weren’t there for us,” the president said.
