Sevastopol Museum Artwork Heavily Damaged in Drone Strike, Governor Says
Governor Mikhail Razvozhaev stated in a Telegram post that the artwork “The Defense of Sevastopol (1854–1855)” by Russian painter Franz Roubaud was badly damaged in a fire caused by an overnight UAV attack.
The monumental piece, measuring 115 meters in length and 14 meters in height, portrays the Russian defense of Sevastopol during the Crimean War against British and French forces. According to reports, Roubaud spent several years working on the painting before completing it in 1904. It was subsequently relocated to Sevastopol that same year and has since remained one of the city’s cultural landmarks.
Emergency services deployed more than 80 firefighters and 22 pieces of specialized equipment to contain the blaze at the museum, as stated by the governor.
Razvozhaev strongly condemned the incident, describing those responsible in harsh terms and accusing them of deliberately targeting cultural heritage and attempting to destroy symbols of identity, according to reports.
